Taking Inventory
Having an inventory of the contents of your home is so important to have for so many reasons!
Even more important when moving, so many things can happen and it is important for you to to be able to get to this information and have "proof"
If you have not been keeping an inventory list as you purchuse new items for your home, moving is a great time to put one together. Keep updating your inventory list as your make changes/upgrades :)
There are a lot of websites that have ideas/helps for putting together your home inventory
To be honest I like pen and paper for a lot of stuff, and that includes my home inventory.
As I said earlier there are a TON of sites to help you, I found the NYCM Insurance Company's Home Contents Inventory Worksheet to be my favorite - You will find a link to the Downloadable PDF under the Helpful Websites - Home Inventory Worksheets
The reason that I like these worksheets the most is that they make sure you have all the information about each item that is so important to insurance companies and to claims adjusters Haven for sake you need to file a claim.
When I did my first home inventory, I made it easy on myself, and just went room by room.
I had never thought of doing a home inventory before and starting from the beginning is not fun!
Trying to remember everything was changeling at times, and it solidified to me, the importance of updating it as I get new items, this remembering things stuff is not east (at least for me)
Their is a second part of Home Inventory - Pictures!!!
Take a picture of EVERYTHING!!! I have a few backups of these pictures.
I have a CD with them all on it, I have the printed pictures, and I have a an Album on Facebook that is set to "Only Me" this is not an album that anyone else can see but me, I know that one might seem odd, and you do not need to do it, but it is easy and fast to get to so for me, it worked great.
Once you have your home inventory done - I like to keep a copy in my Moving Binder -
Filed under the 4th Tab.
I also printed out pictures of each of our electronics, on the back of the picture I wrote the Model and Serial Number :)
Congratulations!! You are now ready for the worst case scenario, lets hope you never have to use it, but if you are using movers, there is a HUGE possibility that you might.
